Girls Highlights:

  • Rachel McArthur of Patriot, Va. laid down a 62-second final lap in the mile after leading the field through the first 3 laps at 5 minute flat pace to snag the final adidas Dream Mile auto spot ahead of Colorado's Lauren Gregory with a strong kick as well, 4:48.65 to 4:49.52.
  • Khalifa St. Fort of St. Thomas Aquinas, trained by former world class sprinter Ato Bolden, defeated the best sprinters in the state of Florida in arguably the most competitive and wide open adidas dream qualifier race in a US #3 clocking of 11.43. Teammate Krystal Sparling was a close runner-up in US #4 time of 11.44, while Indiana state champ and sophomore Lynna Irby was third in US #5 11.47. Five of the top seven times in the nation with Alfreda Steele in fourth at US #7 11.52.
  • In a matchup between 3 Florida state champions in hurdles, East Ridge's Ashley Miller defeats both Kimani Rushing (US #6 13.49) and Michelle Atherley (13.82) in a US #5 clocking of 13.49 in one of the deepest 100 meter hurdles races nationally this spring. The two hurdlers Rushing and Atherley also went head to head in the triple jump with Rushing leaping over 40 feet at 40'0.50" and Atherley a few inches behind her at 39'8" for second.
  • US 400 meter leader Sharrika Barnett of Oak Ridge (FL) attempted to lower her national leading time at Golden South, but ended up winning in her second fastest time of the season at 52.89 with a resounding margin of victory by a full second and a half.
  • Fast 200 finals at the tail end of the meet, which unfortunately did not include Teahna Daniels racing on her home track (ran US #9 23.56 in prelims and opted to skip finals), but still had Diamond Spaulding and Symone Mason running US top 5 times for the top 2 with Spaulding as 23.31 winner and Mason as US #4 23.37.

  • In the Boys Dream Mile qualifier, Florida 3A 1600 and 800 state champ Avery Bartlett beats out pre-meet favorite Conner Mantz, 4:08.55 to 4:08.57, who travelled all the way from Utah for the chance to compete in New York. One of most exciting finishes and battles of the meet as only 2 hundredths of a second separated the two fighting for that Dream Mile spot!

Boys Highlights:

  • Will London of Waco was not pleased with his runner-up finish in the 400m at the Texas 5A State Meet last weekend. He was so displeased that he rolled through rain delays and a slippery track to a U.S. No. 3 time of 45.96 - a time that still ranks just No. 2 in the state of Texas behind the U.S. No. 1 time of 45.75 by 6A state champion Keshun Reed of Arlington Martin. Senior London will compete for Baylor next year; the meet was his first time running on his new home track.
  • All-American and Texas state champion Adrian Piperi of The Woodlands won both the shot put (63-2.25) and discus (183-10).
  • Poor weather conditions forced the pole vault competition into an indoor facility with 21-foot ceilings. The field still included four 17-foot pole vaulters, though, headlined by national runner-up and former national high school record holder Paulo Benavides, as well as All-Americans Brandon Bray and Jacob Wooten. Bray won in 17-0; he made several solid attempts at 17-9 but did not clear the height.
  • Alex Rogers of New Braunfels Canyon ran a six-second PR to win the 1600m in 4:08.72, good for US #10. The senior swept the 1600m and 3200m at the Texas 6A state meet last weekend.

The two-time Texas state champion in the event went out in a suicidal 58 seconds for her first lap, as Gabby Crank stuck right behind her in 59 seconds. Miller slowed to 67 for the second lap, crossing the line in a new personal record and US #2 time of 2:05.94 as Crank ran 2:10.95 for second. Lynnette Amaram of Stafford was third in 2:11.93.
  • National indoor champion Asa Garcia of Texas City won the triple jump in 40-0.25, though she was displeased with the effort as the event was moved indoors due to weather conditions. The University of Texas recruit jumped US #2 42-5.75

Highlights:

  • Once again, the only competition for elite pole vaulting twins Lexi and Tori Weeks is each other. Lexi, the National High School Record Holder for the indoor pole vault (14-3.25), edged her identical twin for the state title, 4,481 points to 4,480 points. That's right - Lexi won by a single point. The competitive drama was heated through the final event of the 800m, as Tori actually edged Lexi, 2:19.47 to 2:19.81. But the 826 points that Lexi earned for her effort was enough to keep her slight lead.

Interestingly enough, one event that is not contested in the seven-event heptathlon challenge is the twins' specialty - the pole vault. The sisters are headed to Arkansas next year and the world will have to wait and see if they dabble in the multi-events or stick to the vault. Lexi and Tori currently lead the nation in the pole vault with marks of US #1 14-2 and US #2 13-10, respectively.

Highlights:

  • Foot Locker XC All-American Jesse Reiser (McHenry, IL) puts together a solid 4:09.85 1600m/9:04.85 3200m double. Reiser ranks US #5 at 8:49.40 in the 3200m, but the 1600m marked his first effort this season under 4:10 as junior Keagan Smith of Huntley kept things close and spurred Reiser to throw down a 55-second final quarter. Reiser now ranks US #10 and Smith, who finished in 4:10.70, ranks US #19.

After the race, Reiser said, "I ran sub 4:10 last year but I haven't really had the race to do it this year. My goal was to go for the win and just qualify for state but when it came down to the last lap, there was still a guy with me so I had to close pretty hard and ended up going 55 the last lap."

  • The Susquehanna Township girls put down some great times in the relays at 46.66 in the 4x100 and 3:47.74 in the 4x400, but finished second unfortunately in both to the Cheltenham girls (US #18 46.43) in the 4x100 and North Penn girls (US #17 3:46.73) in the 4x400.

Anderson went on to a career at the University of Texas as a 17-time All-American honoree; Ellis will compete for the University of Miami next year. Ellis' last state title came as a sophomore in 2013, when she won the 400m in 54.34. She also won the 400m as a freshman in 54.08, a time that still stands as her second-fastest mark.
