Penn Relays interview: Delesha Conquest

1.      When did you start doing track and field? When did you realize you were good at it?

I started running my freshman year. I began to realize I was good at track towards the end of my freshman year. Gabby and I were the only freshman running on the A team relays. To me, that was an honor.

2.      What is your knowledge of the tradition of female hurdlers/sprinters at Glasgow High School? How does that tradition affect what you do?

3.      My knowledge of the tradition of female hurdlers/sprinters at Glasgow is quite good. I know Jernail Hayes was a legend that came before me. She has the school record for the 300 meter hurdles. My goal is to break her record before this season is over and I graduate. The tradition of her having the school record affects me today because people are expecting me to break it.

4.      What is your mindset going into Penns? What are your expectations?

My mindset going into Penns is real simple. I plan to run my best in both relays as well as the hurdle. Whether we win or lose I just want this experience to be enjoyable. My goal for the 400h is to just go in there, stay focused on my race and run the best that I can!

5.      Who has helped you to become the athlete you are today? Who is a role model for you on and off the track? Why?

6.      The people who have helped me become the athlete I am today are my coaches, teammates, friends and family. Without them I would not have the support I need to do well. I have three role models. Two on the track and one off. My mother is my role model off the track. She encouraged me to do things I never would have thought I could do. My two role models on the track are Lolo Jones and Gabby Coleman. Lolo Jones is an Olympic hurdler. She inspires me to train to become the best hurdler I can be. Gabby Coleman is my high school track teammate. We have been running together for 4 years. When we run, we push each other to run faster and to get better times. Gabby believes in me even when I don’t want to believe in myself. Gabby is a great teammate, and it was great to run with her for the past 3 years.

7.      What are your goals for the rest of this season?

My goals for the rest of the season are to win the state title for the 100 and 300 meter hurdles. How I plan on achieving this goal is to work hard, train, and stay focused.

8.      What are you future plans for track and field? Where do you see yourself in 5 years as it relates to track and field?
My plans for next year are to attend a 4 year university and major in business with a minor in fashion merchandising. I also plan on running track in college. In 5 years, I see myself hopefully competing in the Olympics. That is my biggest goal in my track career, and I plan to make it become a reality.
