TSTCA Outdoor Championships

West Mifflin

Highlights and photos by Phil Grove

The distance runners didn't seem to care for it. Neither did the sprinters, high jumpers or relay teams. And the spectators, coaches and officials weren't too keen on it either.

For the pole vaulters, especially Bridget Guy of Hempfield Area, Saturday -- with its strong wind -- was a day to smile about and a day to go high.

Despite temperatures that didn't move much above freezing, Guy rode a reliable tailwind to a state-best 12 feet, 1 inch to win the girls' vault over teammate Lexi Masterson in the spotlight performance at the Tri-State Coaches meet at West Mifflin.

"Yes, I was excited," Guy said when asked about her first reaction to discovering the cold, steady breeze would be at the backs of the pole vaulters. "This one was a nice tailwind, and it really helped me a lot."

Guy and Masterson were the only vaulters left when they entered the competition at 10-6, with each over on their first try. Masterson was in the lead after clearing the next two heights without a miss, while her teammate needed two jumps at 11-0.

Everything changed at 12-0 as Guy used just one try, and Masterson finished second after a trio of misses to finish with a T-PA#2 11-6.

"Today was probably one of my better days this season for weather," the runner-up said. "Even though it was cold, the wind was blowing in the right direction. I just had to keep warming up and keep trying to run as fast as I could."

With the medals decided and a new state No. 1 in place, the Hempfield Area coaching staff and Guy had a big decision to make about how high to set their short-term goal. After plenty of discussion, the bar somewhat surprisingly went up just an inch. The reason -- Guy's coaches were looking to lock up a qualifying height for the New Balance Outdoor Nationals in June.

"Three-quarters of an inch … it was either go 12-1 and secure nationals or go 12-3 and just miss nationals," coach Matt Fox said of the alternatives facing the group gathered near the runway. "It was a tough decision. I kept thinking 12-3, 12-3, but I would have hated for her to have these conditions and not have (the New Balance qualifier of 12-0.75) because we didn't go up one inch."
Having already won the long jump over teammate Maddie Holmberg (17-9.5 to 17-5.5), Guy still had other work to attend to as the pole vault was nearing its conclusion. She had to leave the runway for a few minutes to run the leadoff leg on the Lady Spartans' 400-meter relay squad, which finished second in 50.14 seconds.

"I liked that because I got to let my excitement cool down and focus on the next jump," Guy said of what could have been a distraction in grabbing a baton and heading for the track.

Down to her final try at her second PA No. 1 mark of the day, Guy returned to the runway, took a breather and then slipped over the bar.

"I saw the boys warming up (while I was running the relay) and I thought, Oh, I guess I'm done," she said. "I just put (my boots) on and was going to go. I knew I had one jump left, I just thought they were going to pass it. I'm glad I took my last jump (at 12-1).

"I wasn't expecting that (height today) because last meet I no-heighted. We had a big headwind, and I was just freaking myself out."

Moffett Tops Wind, Competitors Again

A week after topping a state-best 6-8 to win the Butler Invitational high jump, Malik Moffett of Cathedral Prep had Mother Nature to worry about again as the blustery conditions ruled.
"It was very windy," Moffett said. "I had to push through it. I just wanted to get the win."

Grabbing the gold medal was not an easy task as Moffett had difficulty from his opening height of 6-0. After a pair of misses, the senior cleared with inches to spare as the field was cut to five.
Despite another big cushion in his second-round over at 6-2, Moffett found himself behind as De'Lorian Day of Hempfield Area PRed on his opening jump at the height. Moffett needed all three jumps to register the win but again had room to spare at 6-4 before trying twice at 6-6 and then calling it a day.

"I don't really remember what happens in the air," Moffett said. "They always tell me to put my head back."

Making his 800-gram javelin as flightworthy as possible, Luke Smorey of Baldwin improved his No. 7 standing in the state to 184-5 with a victory over Indiana Area's Corey Denlinger (PA#10 178-7) and Mt. Lebanon's Trevor Buda (178-6). Smorey's opening throws all topped 180 feet, with his final toss of the preliminaries also measuring 184-4.

Natalie Shiffler of Hempfield won the girls' javelin at 129-0, which is now No. 8 in the state, while other standouts were Deilona DeVaughan of host West Mifflin with a PA#4 122-7 effort to win the discus over Rachel Fyalkowski of Hempfield and her PA#9 115-7 toss and the 115-4 from Hempfield's Jenna Farruggia. Taylor McCorkle of Oakland Catholic won the 100 and 200 dashes (12.47 and 25.74).

For the boys, Montae Nicholson of Gateway improved his PA#9 clocking in the 110 hurdles to 14.83, while Greg Miaczynski of Central Tech moved up to No. 10 in the state in the 300 hurdles at 39.37. Mt. Lebanon scored a mild upset in the 4x100 relay with its 43.51 edging Cathedral Prep's 43.52 in a meeting of two of the state's top 4 quartets.

Ean DiSilvio of Allderdice and Vincentian Academy's Alex Archer battled for a total of 12 laps, with DiSilvio pulling away decisively over the final meters of each race for the 1,600-3,200 double.
