Workout Wednesday - Kyle Lund

MileSplit.com visited Oakdale junior Kyle Lund fresh off running a pair of state leading times at the Scorpion Classic last Thursday with a 4:16 performance in the 1600 including a 61 second last 400 meter lap kick and then coming back to take the 800 meter run as well in a 1:53 personal best.

Lund won both Maryland indoor state titles in the 1600 and 800 this past week for the 2A classification, but has taken advantage of invitational season to race against and defeat higher quality competition including Loudoun Valley's Sam Affolder in a 800 meter run a few weeks ago as well as a loaded Scorpion Classic 1600 meter field including Eldad Mulugueta, Obsaa Feda, and Camden Gilmore among others.

The workout this week for Lund is called speed endurance by Coach Lillard at Oakdale as he gives his athletes full recovery to run an all out effort. At least for Lund's two 400 meter repeats, that was certainly the case as he went 51.35 on his first repeat and then followed that up with another swift 53.67. Keep in mind that Lund's open 400 PR is 50.03.

After another full recovery, Lund jumped into 2 sets of 4x200 meter repeats under a much more controlled effort. He has done 200 repeats as fast as 23-24 second range in the past, but Coach Lillard insisted in order to do as many 8 repeats to keep it under control around 28 seconds. Lund followed coaches instructions while looking very comfortable running 28 seconds for 7 of the 8 repeats with one 27 second repeat in the middle.

His fitness certainly indicates someone capable of approaching 1:50 in the 800 this spring as well as 4:10 in the 1600, which would set himself up well to take it up another notch for his senior year still remaining.

We will see Lund racing next at the Central Maryland Conference Championships (comprising Frederick County & Washington County schools) on Wednesday, May 1st, which will be LIVE streamed on MileSplit.com. The action starts at 3:30 PM on his home track at Oakdale High School in Ijamsville, Maryland.
