Rivalries often blossom from sharing an area close in geographic proximity. It is no surprise that Appoquinimink and Middletown High Schools have become local rivals over the years. The school's cross country coaches recently coordinated a community building event for the two teams. Each team ran from their respective school to the town center and were unexpectedly greeted by their 'rival' team, school administrators and coaches. Each staff member was wearing a neon pink shirt that read, "Middletown and Appo... together we run this town". All athletes received a t-shirt. 20% of the proceeds benefited Breast Cancer Awareness.
Literally and figuratively bringing teams together, Appoquinimink and Middletown coordinated this year's 27th Annual Middletown Invitational. Twenty three Delaware schools are currently registered to compete in today's race, which is being held at Lums Pond.
Last year, the race was run at St Andrews and had impressive performances. A senior heavy, St. Andrew's took the boys title, with 5 boys placing in the top 13. All 5 were 2019 graduates. The girl's race was led by a younger pack. Tiffany Herrera, from St. Marks crossed the line first as a freshman, but the Ursuline Raiders took the championship, capturing 3 out of the 4 top positions.
The mix of talent this year should provide a good battle.
JV races begin at 3:30 followed by Varsity races at 4:30.
