LADY HORNETS FINISH FIFTH AT BOW-TIE TRACK CLASSIC

COLLEGEVILLE, Pa. - On just one day rest after Thursday's season-opening meet, the Delaware State University women's indoor track and field team traveled to Ursinus College and finished fifth overall out of 19 teams at the Bow-Tie Track Classic Saturday afternoon.

Senior Tracey Fan Fan (Maplewood, N.J.) took first place, good for 10 points, in the 60-meter hurdles with a time of 9.20.

The Hornets collected a combined 18 points in the 60-meter dash.  Senior Ayanna Kelly (Atlanta, Ga.) placed third in the event with a time of 8.03 while junior Calisa Emerson (Wilmington, Del.) was fourth in 8.07.  Sophomore Vernetta Biggs (Accokeek, Md.) and Chalsea Clark (Windsor, Conn.) finished fifth and sixth with respective times of 8.21 and 8.22.

Freshman Ashley Robinson (Dover, Del.) finished the 800-meter run in a time of 2:34.63, good for third place, while junior Breyonna Spriggs (Philadelphia, Pa.) was seventh in 2:51.71.

The Hornets tallied 20 points with first place finishes in both the 4x200 and 4x800 meter relays.  In the 4x2, the DSU 'A' squad consisting of Emerson, Kelly, Clark and Biggs finished in a time of 1:45.52.   In the 4x8, the 'A' squad of sophomore Ketsia Dornevil (Philadelphia, Pa.), junior Dashera Richardson (Philadelphia, Pa.), Fan Fan and Robinson placed first with a time of 10:14.05.

Del State compiled a total of 31 points in the field events.  In the high jump, senior Kristen Johnson (Vernon, Conn.) earned eight points for the Hornets with a judge's ruling height of 1.52 meters.

Junior Krystina Muhammad (Newark, Del.) also took home eight points for DSU with her second place finish distance of 11.42 meters in the triple jump.

Wrapping up the jumps points were freshmen Tiffani Savage and Briana Tilghman in the long jump.  Savage finished fifth with a 4.89m while Tilghman was seventh with a distance of 4.57m.

In the shot put, Maria Gwengi placed fourth with a throw of 11.81 meters while Candace Bailey was seventh with a throw of 10.75m.

Coppin State and host Ursinus tied for first place with a total of 171 points on the day.  The Hornets finished fifth with 85 points.

The Del State women do not compete again for another month when they travel to Manhattan, N.Y. for the Collegiate Series held at the NYC Armory.
