DAY ONE AT MEAC INDOOR CHAMPIONSHIPS COMPLETE

LANDOVER, Md. - The first day of the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference Indoor Track and Field Championships was relatively quiet for the Delaware State University Hornets as they had just five student-athletes competing in Thursday's events at the Prince George's Sports and Learning Complex.

Junior Ryan Carter (Wilmington, Del.) qualified for the men's 200m finals (held Saturday) with his eighth place finishing time of 22.08.  Morgan State's Calvin Dascent was the 200m's top finisher Thursday with a time of 21.65.  Earlier this season, Carter posted a season- and team-best 200m time of 21.55 at the Saturday Night at the Armory II Track Meet, held in New York, N.Y. on Jan. 28.

Senior Tariq Devore (New York, N.Y.) and junior Edward Hurley (Virginia Beach, Va.) also competed in Thursday's 200m preliminaries.  Devore finished in 15th place with a time of 22.38 while Hurley was 24th in a time of 23.08.

In the men's long jump, sophomore Jordan Wilson (Smyrna, Del.) finished with a distance of 6.62m, good for ninth place overall.  North Carolina A&T's Jared Baldwin posted a distance of 7.13m, good for first place overall.

On the women's side, junior Krystina Muhammad (Newark, Del.) was the lone performer Thursday for Delaware State.  Muhammad placed 14th in the women's long jump with a distance of 4.93m.   Champagne Bell, a sophomore from Norfolk State, took home first place honors with a distance of 6.17m.

The Hornet men and women did not record any team points Thursday.

The reigning MEAC men's indoor track and field champion Norfolk State Spartans tallied 36 points with two events scored.  North Carolina A&T is second with 12 points, followed by the University of Maryland Eastern Shore in third with 11 points.  Florida A&M and Coppin State rounded out the top five with six and five points, respectively.

On the women's side, Florida A&M took the lead heading into day two with 20 points.  The defending MEAC champion Hampton Lady Pirates were second with 16 points followed by Norfolk State in third with 14 points.

The championships continue Friday with the men's heptathlon at 9 a.m. Other field events on Friday's slate include the women's pentathlon, men's and women's high jump and men's and women's weight throw.  The student-athletes return to the track to compete in the men's and women's 800m.  Semifinals of the men's and women's 60m hurdles, 60m dash and 400m dash will also take place during day two's action.

Competition concludes on Saturday beginning at 9 a.m. with the men's and women's shot put, pole vault and triple jump.  Running events begin at 1 p.m. with the men's and women's mile run.  Rounding out the evening's events will be the men's and women's 4x400m relay race at 3:40 p.m.
