South Hills Classic

Baldwin

Photos and Story by Phil Grove

A pair of state runners-up in the javelin a year ago registered meet records in headlining solid early season efforts at the South Hills Classic.

Days after he opened his 2012 schedule with a school-record and US#2 javelin toss of 212 feet, 3 inches, Billy Stanley of South Park registered two more throws over the 200-foot mark. His opener of 203-8 was good enough for the win by more than 30 feet, as was his second-rounder of 202-9. Another of former South Park jav standout Chad Radgowski's efforts was wiped from the books, this time a 192-2 missile from 2005.

Meanwhile, Jessie Merckle of Fort Cherry started a busy day for herself with her specialty, winning the javelin with a US#2 of 151-0 and backing it up with a 148-footer. Merckle, who also placed in the long and triple jumps, needed every bit of those two throws as Samantha Taylor of Gateway was second at a US#4 of 143-2.

Other top efforts for the boys came from North Allegheny's Kyle Shivetts, whose 11.10 and 22.28 clockings were easy winners in the 100- and 200-meter dashes. Teammate Vincent Tonzo blazed 1:54.26 in the 800 run, while North East's Ryan Smathers nipped Grove City Area's Daniel Jaskowak at twice the distance, 4:21.86 to 4:22.01.

Jaskowak was second again in the 3,200, as his 9:33.31 was bested by the 9:32.27 from Baldwin's Andrew Kuchta. Torey Doaty of Central Catholic led a 1-2 finish for the Vikings in the 300 hurdles, recording a 39.71 in the next-to-the-last heat. In the 400 relay, Gateway's 43.38 was more than 1.5 seconds ahead of the field.

In addition to finishing second to Stanley in the javelin for the second consecutive year, David Reinhardt of Bradford Area had two field event wins. He defended his meet title in the discus (159-1) and moved up a spot in the shot put (53-11). Jesse Laverdiere of Laurel Highlands edged Brandon Teribery of Bradford Area as both cleared 15 feet in the pole vault.

The final big effort of the afternoon came from one of five winners from outside Pennsylvania. Errin Baynes of Wheeling Park (W.Va.) soared 6-10 to start his high jump campaign, removing a 6-6 jump in 2010 by McDowell's Patrick Cochran from the books and beating the field by a whopping 8 inches.

On the track for the girls, Callie Gunzenhauser of Mt. Lebanon reeled in and passed front-running Kelsey Metheny of Bethel Park on the last lap of the 1,600, reaching the line in 5:13.63 to Metheny's 5:14.26. Metheny and her Bethel Park teammates dominated the 4x800 relay, with a 9:36.02 effort more than 10 seconds ahead of the runner-up.

Eliza Lowe of Grove City showed strong form in a pair of hurdle victories, clocking 15.48 in the 100s and 46.67 in the 300 barriers. Anna Chodubski of McDowell won the long jump at 17-11.50, leading two others past the 17-foot mark.
