DSU QUIETLY OPENS MEAC OUTDOOR CHAMPIONSHIPS

GREENSBORO, N.C. - The first day of the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference Outdoor Track and Field Championships were relatively quiet for the Delaware State University Hornets as they had just four student-athletes competing in Thursday's events at the Irwin Belk Track on the campus of North Carolina A&T State University.

Through two events scored, the Hornet men are tied for seventh place with Coppin State with four points.  The Del State women didn't record any team points in day one competition.

Junior Quintin Fortes (Reston, Va.) earned the lone points on the day for DSU, scoring four with his fourth place finish in the men's discus throw.  Fortes finished with a high throw of 46.45m.

The other three Delaware State competitors qualified for Saturday's events.

Senior Tracey Fan Fan (South Orange, N.J.) finished third in her heat with a time of 1:00.20 in the 400m hurdles.  Fan Fan will compete in the 400m hurdles, scheduled for Saturday at 2:55 p.m.

In the men's 400m hurdles, junior Kevaughn Laviea (Dover, Del.) ran a season-best time of 53.49 to finish second in heat one.  The men's 400m hurdles final is scheduled fr 3:05 p.m. on Saturday.

Wrapping up the day for the Hornets was junior Ryan Carter's (Wilmington, Del.) season-best qualifying time of 20.91 in the 200m dash. Carter looks to bring home the gold in the finals, scheduled for 3:20 p.m. Saturday.

In team action, the University of Maryland Eastern Shore tallied 19 points to take the lead on the women's side while North Carolina Central recorded 10 points on the men's side to top the MEAC standings.

The Championships continue tomorrow with the women's heptathlon and men's decathlon at 9 a.m.  Other field events on Friday's slate include the men's and women's long jump, high jump and shot put.  The afternoon continues with semifinals in the women's 100m hurdles and men's 110m hurdles, 400m dash, 100m dash and 800m run.  The women's and men's 5000m will close out the day beginning at 5:30 p.m.

Competition concludes Saturday at 9 a.m. with field events including: men's and women's pole vault, javelin, and triple jump. The women's and men's 4x100m relays will begin the running finals at 1 p.m.  Rounding out the evening's events will be the men's and women's 4x400m relay race at 4:20 p.m.
