MEAC DAY TWO: FOUR QUALIFY FOR SATURDAY?S ACTION

GREENSBORO, N.C. - Four members of the Delaware State University men's and women's outdoor track and field team qualified for the final day of the 2012 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference Championships and two more recorded points for the Hornets as day two of the event wrapped up Friday at the Irwin Belk Track on the campus of North Carolina A&T State University.

Through six events scored, the Hornet men fell to 10th place with 10 points, just three behind Hampton.  The DSU women are in 11th place with one point.

In the men's long jump, junior Darius Sivels (Milford, Del.) tallied five points for the Hornets with his fourth place mark of 6.97m. 

Sophomore Maria Gwengi (Middletown, Del.) recorded the lone points for the DSU women as she finished eighth overall in the women's shot put with a throw of 12.87m, good for one point.

Senior Tracey Fan Fan (South Orange, N.J.), who qualified for Saturday's 400m hurdle finals in day one competition, will also compete in the 100m hurdle finals on Saturday after her performance of 14.10 in Friday's preliminaries. 

Also qualifying for day three action for the Hornet women is sophomore Ketsia Dornevil (Philadelphia, Pa.).  Dornevil finished sixth overall in the 800m run preliminaries with a season-best time of 2:10.67.

In the men's 800m, senior Donte' Holmes (Hyattsville, Md.) ran a 1:50.72, good for third overall to qualify for Saturday's final.

Wrapping up Friday's qualifiers was junior Ryan Carter (Wilmington, Del.) in the men's 400m dash.  In possibly the tightest race of the day, Carter finished second overall with a season-best time of 46.63.

The defending MEAC champion Norfolk State Spartans advance to day three with a total of 56.5 points in men's action while the UMES Hawks are in second place with 29 points.

On the women's side, Hampton totaled 62 points to lead after day two's action while the University of Maryland Eastern Shore fell to second place with 36 points.

Competition concludes Saturday at 9 a.m. with field events including: men's and women's pole vault, javelin, and triple jump. The women's and men's 4x100m relays will begin the running finals at 1 p.m.  Rounding out the evening's events will be the men's and women's 4x400m relay race at 4:20 p.m.
