JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - The Delaware State University men's and women's outdoor
track and field team will send six student-athletes, two for the first time in
their career, next week to the 2012 NCAA Division I Outdoor Track and Field East
Preliminaries, held at the University of North Florida's Hodges Stadium, the
NCAA announced Thursday.
The Hornets have four competitors experienced in the NCAA
Championship setting in juniors Tyquan Brown (Neptune, N.J.), Ryan Carter (Wilmington, Del.) and Tariq Devore (Queens, N.Y.) and senior Donte' Holmes (Hyattsville, Md.).
The 2012 prelims will be the fourth straight for the DSU 4x400 relay
while each individual will travel to the event for at least the second time in
his career.
The quartet
qualified for the East Preliminary Round with their IC4A Championship time of
3:07.14 last weekend. Additionally, the
Hornets captured the MEAC 4x400 title in 3:08.52. DSU is seeded 10th for the East
Prelims and will compete in the Quarterfinals at 9:25 p.m. on Saturday, May 26.
Individually,
Carter and Holmes will participate in the 400m and 800, respectively.
Carter
qualified for his third straight East Preliminary Round with a career-best time
of 46.31, posted at the MEAC Championships.
He previously competed in the 400m at the national level in 2010 while participating
in the 200m last season. The sprinter is
seeded 20th out of 48 competitors for Thursday's 400m First Round,
held at 7:20 p.m.
In the 800m,
Holmes qualified for his second East Preliminary Round with a season-best time
of 1:48.48 at the Pepsi Florida Relays.
He also attended the 2010 East Prelims in the 800m. Holmes is seeded 11th out of 48
for Thursday's 800m First Round, held at 8:10 p.m.
On the women's
side, Delaware State will send senior Tracey
Fan Fan (South Orange, N.J.) and sophomore
Ketsia Dornevil (Philadelphia, Pa.) to
the NCAA East Prelims for the first time in their careers.
Fan Fan is
seeded 32nd in the 400m hurdles and qualified for the event with a
career-best time of 59.51 at the MEAC Championships. She will compete at 5 p.m. on Thursday.
After
improving her career-best time by four-plus seconds, Dornevil qualified for the
800m with a time of 2:08.40, also at the MEAC Championships. She is seeded 46th for the 800m,
scheduled for 8:35 p.m. on Thursday.
The Quarterfinals
for the 400m, 800m and 400m hurdles are set for Friday.
The 2012 NCAA
Outdoor Track and Field Championships will be held June 6-9 in Des Moines, Iowa
at Drake Stadium.
