SMYRNA, Del. - The Delaware State University men's and women's cross country teams hosted their first meet of the season Friday afternoon and each placed fourth in their respective races at the Delaware State University Outreach and Research Facility.
The Hornet women finished with 98 points and were led by junior T'Nay Williams (Upper Marlboro, Md.). Williams placed 14th overall with a time of 21:27.01, a nearly two-minute improvement over her race at the University of Maryland Eastern Shore last Saturday. UMES' Latitia Salley finished first overall with a time of 19:19.09.
Hampton University won the women's 5k race with 37 points while Morgan State and Howard University followed with 66 and 92 points, respectively. UMES tied for fourth with Delaware State with 98 points. Sixth place went to the University of District of Columbia with 144 points and Coppin State rounded out the scoring with 150 points in seventh place.
DSU freshman Anaya Reid (St. Cloud, Fla.) finished the race in 22:51.58, good for 19th place overall and an almost two-minute improvement over her previous meet. Fellow freshman Brianna Sims (New Haven, Conn.) placed 21st with a time of 23:04.13 while graduate student Alisha Jones (Newark, Del.) was 23rd in 23:13.95. Another graduate student, Tracey Fan Fan (Maplewood, N.J.), rounded out the scoring for the Hornets as she finished in 26th place with a time of 23:30.78.
On the men's side, freshman Terrell Oliver (Camden, Del.) led Delaware State once again, this time finishing ninth overall with a time of 16:45.62. UDC's Hillary Mugun won the men's 5k with a time of 15:31.88.
Howard University finished the men's race with a total of 33 points, good for first overall. Hampton and UDC followed in second and third place with 77 and 102 points, respectively. Coppin State finished fifth with 111 points while UMES was sixth with 113 points. Morgan State placed in seventh with 126 points.
Sophomore Brandon Barnes (Dover, Del.) and freshman Joshua Johnson finished back-to-back in 21st and 22nd place with respective times of 18:15.95 and 18:22.42 for the Hornets. Junior Kevaughn Laviea (Dover, Del.) placed 26th in a time of 18:40.07 while senior Stephen Bowe was 27th in 18:42.18.
Delaware State travels south next weekend to Princess Anne, Md. for the UMES Cappy Anderson Invitational, held Saturday, Sept. 15. The women's race is slated for 10:30 a.m. with the men following.
