Tigers hold off Vikings; Lady Tigers edge Harker Heights By DAVID CAMPBELL Eagle Staff Writer KILLEEN - Don't look back. A Bryan Viking may be gaining on you. To their credit, the A&M Consolidated Tigers never did look back, winning the boys team championship by scoring 175 points at the District 13-5A track and field meet Wednesday. Consol's depth paid off, but Bryan made a strong run at the team title. The Vikings, who had just three points after the opening day of field events, finished in second place with 123 points. They celebrated that number in the 110-meter hurdles, finishing 1-2-3 with Jonathan Johnson leading the Vikings' sweep with a time of 14.28 seconds, just ahead of teammates Robert Robinson and Melvin Bowser. "I focused on myself, but I looked around at the finish," Johnson said. "They let me know [they were there]." Consol defended its championship by taking the top two spots in the 800 and 1,600 in front of a crowd of 150 at Leo Buckley Stadium. Consol's Jorell Laube played big parts in both races. He finished just behind a hobbling Duncan Phillips in the 800 and ran impressively to win the 1,600, where his time of 4:34.29 edged teammate Luis Ocampo's 4:35.48. Phillips lifted the pressure of his painful left foot as the crossed the finish line in 1:56.48 to win the 800. "I can walk on it fine, but when I put more pressure on it, it starts hurting," said Phillips, who weaved his way though traffic early to grab a lead he never relinquished. "I tried to build a little lead on the backstretch. I didn't hear anybody coming, so I didn't really finish all that hard." Link to Article
