Middle school sports - The Cape school district can now turn its attention to the only universal religion in the United States, the playing of sports. Cape’s middle schools offer boys' soccer and football in the fall, and for girls there is field hockey. Now as a result of zealots - sometimes called enthusiasts - and “pent-up” demand, the sports of volleyball for girls and cross country for boys and girls will be added. Running is year-round. In December it's the Rehoboth Marathon. Jake Bamforth, a high school runner at Sussex Tech, is shown at a water station in 2012 at the eight-mile mark.
Track and field trip - Coach George Pepper looked slightly shell-shocked Wednesday at a triangular track meet at Sussex Tech against the Ravens and Milford Bucs. The veteran has 36 years coaching Cape girls, including the last two Division I state championships, and two years ago had open heart surgery and only missed a week of practice. Pepper was missing seven athletes who were on a field trip because that was their decision and you just can’t argue with “education first” unless you’re an idiot like me and many of my athletic friends who think allegiance to a school team trumps any field trip or leadership conference. We don’t care; it's just how we roll. The Cape girls fell to rival Sussex Tech 85-61 but managed to beat Milford 76-70.

Coastal Cape Henlopen looked like the Sea of Tranquility Oct. 31 as the outside sports teams, fresh from two days off and rested from a two-hour delay, took to the field turf, sprint turf, Bermuda grass, regular old green grass and tartan track to resume a season interrupted by scary Sister Sandy. The 29th running of the Aug. 4 Millsboro Dam Mill 5K was hot and rather unremarkable with a modest field of 131 runners. What is noteworthy is that four teenagers who run cross country for the Sussex Tech Ravens claimed four of the top 11 places. (via capegazette.villagesoup.com)
Excitement is in the air in the Cape Region with Ty and his "Extreme Makeover" crew coming to our community to make a difference for a lucky family. The Seashore Striders family wanted to give back in some way, but we cannot build houses, nor do I think Schell Brothers would want to see me with a hammer. I decided to do what I do best and organize an event in which I hope to have all expenses donated with 100 percent of the proceeds going to the Sussex County Family Fund.
