  • Sports celebrations sometimes last a little too long - By Dave Frederick

Cape senior track girls are (l-r) Julie Kyritsis, Tiana Evans, Kadijah Doughty and Aaliyah Reese. Who knew? - I walked onto the Cape track on the far side of a Senior Day ceremony Monday afternoon, but I had no idea what was up as I’m not on any Senior Day mailing list. I love the track kids because that is my sport - and you thought it was girls' lacrosse. I snapped a shot of Jeremiah Cohen with his Aunt Sheldean, a former student of mine. Four senior girls, shown in photo (l-r) consented to have a picture snapped: Julie Kyritsis, Tiana Evans, Kadijah Doughty and Aaliyah Reese. The Henlopen Conference is this Friday, not Saturday, at Dover High School. Final running events begin at 5 p.m. Who knew?

  • Record win streaks end and new records are set on sports scene - By Dave Frederick

Ben Bamforth broke his older brother Jake's middle school records in the 800 meters in 2:18 and 1,600 in 5:01. The 800-meter relay team of De De Mackey, Katie Frederick, Zoe Scoot and Alia Marshall ran 1.56:6 and broke a long-standing record held by Maxine Fluharty, Rebecca Pepper, Hannah Pepper and Christine MacDonald. I remember Maggie Lingo, left-handed pitcher for the Cape softball team in the 2001 season, pitched every game as Cape went 21-0 before losing in the state tournament. That’s one of those quiet records no one knows about. Willie Savage in his Cape track career had 11 individual state titles and no school records. There are some school sports in which someone holds a school record but no one knows who or what.

  • God Gesture Disqualifies Team: High School Track Team Pointed To Sky [Video]

Columbus, TX – A “God” gesture disqualified a team at a Texas high school on Friday. Columbus High School’s Mighty Cardinals track team wrapped up victory in the 4 x 100m relay, beating the rest of the field by a clear seven yards, when runner Derrick Hayes pointed to the sky to thank what he saw as a divine influence. The God gesture disqualified the team after officials deemed it to be an example of “excessive celebration.” The track team will now miss out on the chance to compete at State level. However, the nature of the celebration which caused the team to ... (via The Inquisitr)

  • Sometimes school gets in the way of sports - By Dave Frederick

Track and field trip - Coach George Pepper looked slightly shell-shocked Wednesday at a triangular track meet at Sussex Tech against the Ravens and Milford Bucs. The veteran has 36 years coaching Cape girls, including the last two Division I state championships, and two years ago had open heart surgery and only missed a week of practice.  Pepper was missing seven athletes who were on a field trip because that was their decision and you just can’t argue with “education first” unless you’re an idiot like me and many of my athletic friends who think allegiance to a school team trumps any field trip or leadership conference. We don’t care; it's just how we roll. The Cape girls fell to rival Sussex Tech 85-61 but managed to beat Milford 76-70.

  • Stupid is as stupid does!

The state’s high school track & field community was disappointed at the news this week that the University of Delaware is getting rid of its indoor track at the Field House.    UD announced that it is putting down artificial turf in the arena so it can be used as an indoor practice facility for both varsity teams as well as students.   But it also means that there will be no facility in Delaware to hold the DIAA’s indoor track & field state championship.
