Caesar Rodney is the prevailing DIAA state indoor track champion and finished the regular dual-meet season undefeated. They were expected to dominate the Henlopen Conference Meet May 9 and 10 and delivered, scoring 167 points followed by Dover 118 and Cape 96. Ben Bamforth broke his older brother Jake's middle school records in the 800 meters in 2:18 and 1,600 in 5:01. The 800-meter relay team of De De Mackey, Katie Frederick, Zoe Scoot and Alia Marshall ran 1.56:6 and broke a long-standing record held by Maxine Fluharty, Rebecca Pepper, Hannah Pepper and Christine MacDonald. I remember Maggie Lingo, left-handed pitcher for the Cape softball team in the 2001 season, pitched every game as Cape went 21-0 before losing in the state tournament. That’s one of those quiet records no one knows about. Willie Savage in his Cape track career had 11 individual state titles and no school records. There are some school sports in which someone holds a school record but no one knows who or what.
Track and field trip - Coach George Pepper looked slightly shell-shocked Wednesday at a triangular track meet at Sussex Tech against the Ravens and Milford Bucs. The veteran has 36 years coaching Cape girls, including the last two Division I state championships, and two years ago had open heart surgery and only missed a week of practice. Pepper was missing seven athletes who were on a field trip because that was their decision and you just can’t argue with “education first” unless you’re an idiot like me and many of my athletic friends who think allegiance to a school team trumps any field trip or leadership conference. We don’t care; it's just how we roll. The Cape girls fell to rival Sussex Tech 85-61 but managed to beat Milford 76-70.

The golden era of sports for Cape girls from the spring of 2009 through the fall of 2012 includes eight state championships: four lacrosse, two field hockey and two for the girls' Division I outdoor track and field team. The few zealots and pundits who follow the sport closely didn’t expect Cape to be back in the tank of contention with the departure of big fish Shanel Dickens and Ali Coning. Coastal Cape Henlopen looked like the Sea of Tranquility Oct. 31 as the outside sports teams, fresh from two days off and rested from a two-hour delay, took to the field turf, sprint turf, Bermuda grass, regular old green grass and tartan track to resume a season interrupted by scary Sister Sandy. Sonja Friend-Uhl won the Masters National Cross Country Championship in San Diego on Sunday October 14 by blistering a 17:50 on the challenging 5k course. The USATF and the San Diego Track Club hosted the event. (via capegazette.villagesoup.com)
Low score wins in cross country; a runner's place finish inserts that integer into the final tabulation. The first five runners count while runners six and seven can displace. A single number is best. A whitewash is 15-50. Distances are 5 kilometers and all courses are different. (via capegazette.villagesoup.com)

Can you feel me? The Cape Henlopen girls' track team battled ear, nose and throat issues with sick or injured athletes over two days and even a hurdler that saw spots before her race on a hot afternoon and slowed it down to a crawl. But one sense not disturbed or disrupted was the sense that they all would touch the championship trophy at the end of the day. (via )

The diversified and talented Cape girls' track team knew it was a long shot to no shot to challenge Tatnall and Padua for the indoor state championship Feb. 11 at the Delaware Field House, but man, “What karma was in play?” as in the first 15 minutes of the meet three of Cape's prime-time performers dropped like playground sprinters in a potato sack race.
